The present excavations of the former Barracks of Jiří z Poděbrad area on the Republic Square in Prague stand for the most extensive excavation of the city center in the history of Czech archaeology. Investor construction project from the very beginning intends to build over ground plot comparable in its overall dimension possibly only with the area of Prague`s Old Town Square. The excavated area (picture 1) lies in the northern part of the New Town of Prague not far from the Old Town ramparts built from the 30`s of the 13th century to 1248. In the absolute proximity (where department store Kotva stands now) there used to be Romanesque church of St. Benedict, commandery of the German Knights` Order with adjacent development and the city gate. The whole area was a part of a large barracks complex in the modern times with the main building (pictures 2 and 3), riding-hall (picture 4) and in the beginning of 2003 destroyed H-shaped building of the stall (pictures 5 and 6). Only St. Joseph church originally belonging to disappeared Capuchin monastery remained from the old historical buildings (picture 7).
